SALDRU’s Malcolm Keswell on poverty traps in new documentary film ‘Uitgesmyt’

A/Prof. Malcolm Keswell, Lead-Principal Investigator on SALDRU’s Land Restitution Evaluation Study (LRES) provides commentary about the generators of poverty in a striking new documentary directed by Dr. Siona O’ Connell, a research affiliate at UCT’s Centre for Curating the Archive.

The documentary, Uitgesmyt, draws attention to the question of forced evictions in rural areas during the apartheid era and the complexities, failures and opportunities around return and restorative justice, by looking at Elandskloof, Algeria and Citrusdal in the Cedarberg region.

In the documentary, Keswell argues, “These communities are traps – violence, substance abuse, mental illnesses. Those inhabitants are going to reproduce the cycle of poverty.”

Uitgesmyt premieres in mid-July and we’re pleased to share this trailer featuring Keswell’s commentary.
