SALDRU’s director, Prof. Murray Leibbrandt, acting director, Prof. Vimal Ranchhod and SALDRU research associate, Prof. Lawrence Edwards, attended the UNU-WIDER conference titled, Think Development – Think Wider, from 13-15 September 2018 in Helsinki, Finland.
The conference showcased UNU-WIDER, its work, notably its research in development economics, and the many people and institutions that are engaged with it. According to UNU-WIDER, “Helsinki has become the hub of this network, producing knowledge of real value to policy makers and practitioners in the developing world, across the UN, and to the international community more broadly.”
The conference programme comprised an impressive array of speakers, including Leibbrandt and Edwards.

Edwards delivered a presentation in the “Enterprise Development” session of the conference under the theme, “Exporting, Importing and Manufacturing Firm Performance in South Africa”.

Leibbrandt delivered an input in the session covering “Inequality in the Developing Giants”. His presentation included joint research conducted with Ranchhod under the theme, “Inequality in the Giants: South Africa”.
