Emma Whitelaw, Nicola Branson, and Murray Leibbrandt discuss the National Student Financial Aid Scheme’s (NSFAS) income threshold for funding eligibility in their article recently published in Econ3x3. In light of current policy discussions about rising student debt and the design of a comprehensive and sustainable financial aid scheme, the authors argue that economic mobility is key to understanding the socio-economic need of different groups, and that considering only income levels at a point in time would be inadequate. The full working paper is featured under the “New publications” section later in this newsletter.
