Building on the momentum of the Wealth Data Science Summer School (WeDSSS), SALDRU researchers Murray Leibbrandt and Muna Shifa taught short courses on inequality and poverty analysis at the launch summer school of the Cluster of Research Excellence in Inequalities, Poverty, and Deprivation (CoRE IPD). The summer school, on The Roots of Poverty, Inequalities, and Deprivation in Africa, was hosted by the Economics Department at the University of Nairobi. More than 40 students from across the African continent participated in this in-person training event, which featured several critical themes, including the historical determinants of inequality, financial inclusion, gender inequality, and the influence of political dynamics. This five-day event featured interactive lectures from eminent scholars from SALDRU’s ACEIR and Guild partners, including the University of Cape Town, University of Ghana, University of Nairobi, and the University of Groningen.

The Summer School also served to formally launch CoRE IPD, a significant research collaboration between ARUA and Guild universities, of which members of the SALDRU team are key partners.
