SALDRU December Workshop
Frontiers in applied economics for developing countries
Call for Papers
SALDRU will be hosting a new annual workshop, the SALDRU December Workshop: Frontiers in applied economics for developing countries. While the first full workshop will be held in December 2025, an ad-hoc version of the workshop will be held this year on 12-13 December 2024 at the University of Cape Town.
The aim of the December workshop is to encourage overseas-based researchers to present frontier Economics research in South Africa, as well as provide a venue for local researchers to engage with and present this kind of work. The explicit criteria is work that is expected to be published in top international Economics journals (i.e. top field/disciplinary and general interest journals).
We will also have a session for PhD students at South African universities to present work and receive feedback from participants.
There are no strict subject-matter restrictions, but we especially encourage papers with a regional focus on Southern Africa, Africa, and other developing regions; and in the fields of Labour Economics and Development Economics, as well as other Applied Microeconomics fields.
The workshop is intended to be small and allow in-depth discussion of a few papers over 2 days.
The 2024 ad-hoc workshop will run on an expedited timeline and therefore has some distinctive features:
- Presenters will have a two-week window to submit papers for consideration after the call for papers is released. While full papers are preferred, extended abstracts (approximately 2 pages) will also be accepted.
- Please submit papers via this online form by 18 October 2024.
- Acceptance decisions will be communicated within 6 days of the close of the call (24 October 2024).
- No funding is available for presenters or attendees. There are also no fees associated with this workshop.
The interim organising committee for the ad-hoc 2024 workshop, which may be expanded, is currently:
- Joshua Budlender (SALDRU)
- Ihsaan Bassier (University of Surrey; SALDRU)
Queries can be sent to Joshua Budlender at joshua.budlender@uct.ac.za. If you wish to attend the workshop but not present, please RSVP to Joshua Budlender.
