Congratulations on your promotion, Professor Ranchhod!

SALDRU is very pleased to announce that Vimal Ranchhod, SALDRU’s Deputy Director, has been promoted to full Professor with effect from July 1st, 2018. Ranchhod joined SALDRU as a post-doctoral fellow in 2008, after graduating with a PhD from the University of Michigan in the USA.

Speaking at the 2018 Siyamphumelela Conference, a three-day event that took place in Johannesburg in June, SALDRU’s Dr. Nicola Branson presented preliminary findings from a study that examines the sources of funding for students at the University of Cape Town (UCT). The study was initiated in response to the wave of 'Fees Must Fall' students’ protests in 2015.

SALDRU launches income comparison tool

Many South Africans don’t understand how exactly their incomes compare to each other nor do we have any idea where we are in the income distribution. To bring some clarity to this question, SALDRU has developed an income comparison tool that allows people to compare their incomes and see how rich or poor they are in comparison to each other.

So, how rich exactly are South Africa’s (SA's) top earners? It’s hard to tell, but the tax data for the years 2011 and 2014 was made available to us, so we dove in and discovered a few nuggets of information about SA’s millionaire class. PhD candidate, Janina Hundenborn, shared data on those earning above R10 million annually, as she talked about the effect of top incomes on inequality in SA at a SALDRU seminar.

A/Prof. Malcolm Keswell, Lead-Principal Investigator on SALDRU’s Land Restitution Evaluation Study (LRES) provides commentary about the generators of poverty in a striking new documentary directed by Dr. Siona O’ Connell. Leibbrandt Delivers Department of Science and Technology’s Budget Vote Speech

International Workshop Examines Income and Wealth Inequality

Murray Leibbrandt joined 72 of the world’s leading economists at the Paris School of Economics to examine income and wealth inequality in a workshop that sought to review different methodological approaches and establish data collection and production standards among different research groups.

Training Demonstrates Significance of Youth Explorer
