This is course targets postgraduate students (Masters and Ph.D.), researchers, and officials in state agencies wanting to analyse social surveys using Stata. Course participants should be familiar with Stata and basic statistical tools, such as regression analysis.
Course content:
- The theory of weighting, clustering and stratification
- The practical implementation of surveys in South Africa
- Survey analysis tools in Stata
- Generating estimates from sample surveys that are representative of the population
- Calculations of the correct standard errors for such estimates
Prerequisites: Participants must have basic Stata skills, for example through completing the UCT Summer Training Programme in Social Science Research using Survey Data, or an undergraduate course in econometrics in which Stata was used.
More information: Please contact Alison Siljeur for information on the next course.
What participants are saying
I appreciated understanding the big picture of how complex surveys are done, the problems that can arise with data analysis and how to correct them. Working in groups on practical exercises was helpful, as were worked examples by the lecturer. I struggled with some of the maths formulae.
– Katherine Morse, Sociology Masters student, University of Cape Town
This course comes at the right time of my thesis writing. The course is quite helpful for those who use survey data like myself. The teaching was excellent, as were the practicals. This course could probably be run for two weeks to allow more time to go deeper into the material.
– Jackson Otieno, Economics PhD student, University of Cape Town
